Noah's 9th birthday was celebrated throughout the month of February. Nearly a week after his birthday, I joined him at school to eat lunch, tag along with him for a couple hours and serve his birthday treats.
I got to eat a delicious school lunch (seriously, it was delicious) and enjoy time in the 3rd grade classroom.
I got in on some math and we went to art:the third graders were working on the beginning steps of a really cool looking boat on water project. The day I was there, they were painting one paper with only cool colors, and another paper with only warm colors. The next time they have art they were going to start creating the water and boat.
This sign in the hallway cracked me up. :-)
Pretty soon it was time for P.E.!
And then it was time to celebrate Noah. His teacher, Mr. Wiens, has a fun way to make the birthday kid feel special. Noah got to sit in the Golden Chair and tell his classmates about how we celebrated his birthday (which we hadn't really done yet), what food he ate (which we also hadn't done yet, but he told them he wanted to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings) and what gifts he got (he'd only received part of his gift from us, a watch. The special trip to Wichita to buy cowboy boots hadn't happened yet) and what kind of cake he'd had (which also hadn't happened yet because I'd been sick and we were waiting for our family celebration to have cake)!
Noah asked for dirt cups as his birthday treats - yum!
But before the dirt cups were passed out, the entire class followed Noah's lead in a fun dance while the classroom lights were turned on and off like a strobe light. It was clear that the kids enjoyed this and I learned Noah knows quite a few dance moves!
Finally it was time to chow down on some dirt.
A few days later, the four of us headed to Wichita for lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings and to Sheplers so Noah could pick out his new boots. Birthday gift complete!
And a full two weeks after his birthday, my family gathered together to celebrate both Noah and Rylee. My mom had endured her final chemo treatment and was ready to eat some real food. So it was definitely time to party!
Noah (finally) got his birthday cake - a white layer cake, with butter cream frosting tinted orange because he wanted it to be a basketball. I wrote "Noah #9" on it and he helped me stick nine candles in it.
My guys watched cousin Rylee open her birthday gifts and Noah patiently waited to open his final birthday gift.
He was thrilled to get some cash and a bag of miniature candy bars my his aunts and cousin! Clearly, food is the way to that kid's heart. :-)
Three days after opening the bag of candy bars, they're all gone. Noah's birthday being spread out for weeks wasn't exactly how we planned to celebrate it - but with the sickness we had going on at the time of his birthday - I think he ended up feeling thoroughly celebrated and loved.
